Jeep Improves Iconic Wrangler

The iconic Jeep Wrangler continues to be one of the most desirable vehicles for serious off-road enthusiasts; its available soft top or removable hard top make it popular with sun worshippers, too.
The Jeep Wrangler is the only vehicle available with a removable windshield and removable doors. In regards to its looks and capabilities, the Wrangler is undoubtedly an extremely unique vehicle.
But for the past five years the Wrangler has been getting its power from an antiquated and underpowered 3.8-liter V-6. Jeep aficionados were hugely disappointed five years ago when Jeep stopped offering the old inline six-cylinder engine, but I think they’ll be quite pleased with this new, more sophisticated and more powerful 285-horsepower V-6 engine.
Compared to the outgoing V-6, this new, smaller displacement engine makes 40 percent more power and 10 percent more torque. It’s also the winner of the prestigious Ward’s 10 Best Engines Award.
I also like that the available automatic transmission has been upgraded from a four-speed unit to a five-speed unit. The Jeep Wrangler is now available with more axle ratios (3.21, 3.73 or 4.10), allowing customers to optimize fuel economy and/or vehicle capability.
Thanks to its new drivetrain, Wrangler feels more refined and delivers slightly improved fuel economy. Plus, when properly equipped, the Jeep Wrangler can tow up to 3,500 pounds.
The Wrangler lineup continues to provide both two- and four-door configurations. The two-door Wrangler accommodates four passengers while the four-door model (known as the Wrangler Unlimited) seats five.
The Wrangler’s shorter wheelbase is more suitable for negotiating tight quarters when off-roading, but the Wrangler Unlimited’s longer wheelbase and rear doors make it more appealing for those who need to haul more people and/or gear.

Ford Racing reveals its latest Mustang project
It’s always interesting to see what the guys who make and sell speed parts will build to show off their wares. Heck, that’s the appeal of the SEMA show in a nutshell. So we’re intrigued by this new 2013 Mustang project from Ford Racing, despite its unfortunate color, “Gotta Have It Green,” a hue that doesn’t exist in the natural world. (Outside of 1980′s album covers, that is.)
As reported on Mustangs Daily, the project starts with everyone’s favorite Ford V8, the Coyote five-liter, but adds a whole bunch of stuff from the Ford Racing Performance Parts catalog, including a 2.3-liter, intercooled, twin-screw Whipple supercharger. The car has a six-speed manual, of course, and there’s an 8.8-inch axle out back. It’s been lowered an inch, thanks to new FRPP springs paired with matching shocks. Stopping power comes courtesy of a 14-inch, four-piston Brembo setup and Laguna Seca brake duct kit. This project ‘Stang is also equipped with a Mustang GT Side Exhaust System, 19-by-9-inch wheels with massive 255/40/ZR19 Pirelli PZero tires, and the Laguna Seca Adjustable Front Splitter.
While we don’t see any performance specs for the car, we know the supercharged V8 is good for 624 horsepower and 536 lb-ft of torque.

2013 Hyundai Genesis Coupe – 2012 Detroit Auto Show Preview. A revised Genesis Coupe was bound to happen, and Hyundai revealed exactly that at a 5000-strong enthusiast gathering at Korea’s Yeongam F1 circuit. Immediately evident is a completely revised front fascia that falls in line with the rest of Hyundai’s lineup. The design change reveals a more aggressive and bolder aesthetic. The car is expected to make its U.S. debut at the North American International Auto Show.
Bigger news still comes from two revised, more powerful engines: a 3.8-liter direct-injected V-6 and a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4. The V-6 now outputs 345 bhp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, while the turbo-4 will generate 271 bhp and 275 lb.-ft. of torque. From the early Korean-spec numbers, this puts the Genesis Coupe in contention with other sporty imports such as Nissan’s 370Z.

2012 Honda Element

The 2012 Honda Element won’t make it to production. Honda announced in December 2010 that the 2011 Honda Element will close out the model run for this compact crossover SUV. Element was the original box on wheels and inspired a host of imitators.
This little wagon debuted for model-year 2003 as an appealingly innovative youth-oriented crossover but struggled to stay relevant in late middle-age. Slow sales doomed its first-generation run to a model-year 2011 conclusion. That’s not to say Honda won’t resurrect the Element after model-year 2012. What form it might take is the question.
Essentially a dorm room on wheels, Element was cosmetically freshened for model-year 2009 and was overdue for ground-up redesign. Element always had its drawbacks, but treated as a piece of recreational gear, its virtues were evident. If those appeal to you, you’ll likely find 2011 Elements hanging on dealer lots even as Honda rolls out 2012 versions of its other models. That spells great deals on leftover Elements with substantial reductions off prices that hovered in the low-$20,000 range.

2012 Toyota Venza

Toyota hasn’t sold a Camry Wagon in years, but in the automaker’s lineup the 2012 Toyota Venza is what comes closest to it today. The Venza provides a higher seating position than a sedan, but a low, more manageable one than tall, upright SUVs, and in terms of space the five-seater slots between the base five-seat RAV4 and the more bloated Highlander seven-seater.
The 2012 Venza completely skips the rugged look of SUVs; but it also dodges the overwrought high-performance look of some crossovers, too. What results is a design that’s already been on the market for three years but still looks soft and contemporary. Standing out isn’t the priority, it seems (even though it looks nice with the available 20-inch wheels); instead, it’s a perfectly competent family vehicle that combines most of the utility offered by a crossover SUV with a lower fastback roofline. Inside, the appointments are a bit more lavish than those within the Camry or Highlander–taking cues, almost, as an on-a-budget Lexus RX 350.
The Venza’s reason for being clearly isn’t performance either, but most families will find it to be adequate if not entertaining. The base 182-horsepower, 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine, teamed to a six-speed automatic falls strictly into the adequate category. It putters along just fine, albeit without much inspiration, with front- or all-wheel drive, but you’ll wish for a gutsier personality on steep hills, or with a full load. With the 268-hp, 3.5-liter V-6, you get a smoother, stronger character that’s again more along the lines of the Lexus RX 350, but you lose several mpg. Overall, the Venza drives much more like a minivan than a sport sedan or SUV; it handles well enough, though not in an inspiring way, because of a soft suspension and numb steering.

Toyota is allowing its North American teams a bit more freedom to build cars that best suit the market in which they work. Earlier in the year, Toyota announced that American designers would be more keyed in to model development, and now comes word that the automaker will no longer be importing Japanese-built Camry sedans into our market. Instead, starting with the 2012 Camry, the popular mid-size sedan will be built Stateside.
Toyota aims to sell 360,000 examples of the Camry per year. In order to produce enough units, Toyota will build the car at both its Georgetown, Kentucky plant and Subaru’s assembly facility in Indiana. By building the Camry in the U.S., the automaker will be attempting to offset losses through dollar-yen exchange rates while also providing a boost to local production facilities.

Many truck models have gained larger and larger dimensions over the years, but the long-lived Mazda B-Series bucked this trend by remaining a true compact pickup for its entire run. Initially an in-house effort, the B-Series ended up as a joint Ford/Mazda production. That’s a nice way of saying that from 1994 onward, the B-Series was essentially a Ford Ranger wearing different clothes. But to its credit, Mazda‘s pickup never lost its compact identity, which made it relatively maneuverable without sacrificing too much pickup functionality.
The B-Series had its heyday in the late ’90s to early 2000s. During these years, its nimbleness (on and off-road), trio of engine choices and large variety of trim configurations made it a tempting choice. But toward the end of its run, the Mazda stood frozen in time while rivals continued to improve.
